Herting Project in the Ätran River delivers

2020-05-14 World Fish Migration Foundation have a vison of rivers full of fish. The dam removal Project in River Ätran in Sweden is an excellent example where this vision is fullfilled.

River Ätran delivers and Ph.D. Olle Calles takes part in a world wide webbinar and informs of the good example performed by the dam removal of the Herting dam in River Ätran, Sweden.

In 2014 the King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf inaugurated the opened and restored pristine river bed where the old hydropower dam had been removed abruptly by dynamite and bulldozers.

Shortly after restoration 30 000 new salmon fry hatched in the opened stream and the rise of Atlantic salmon doubled from 2000 to 4000 spawning fishes each year.

His Majesty the King had a vision that “other hydropower owners should follow this good example and have the courage and inspiration to take action to gain biological diversity and increase opportunities for recreation and angling”. Read more about WFMD in River Ätran here.
